The number one thing I get asked about on Instagram is my hair! Having platinum blonde or grey/silver hair is hard and can be really expensive. Awhile back I shared this post featuring my hair secret weapon, Clairol Shimmer Lights Shampoo and Condition. It’s been a big hit, but I still get a lot of questions so I revamped this post and gave it a little update to answer all your hair questions.
Anyone with light hair knows that the color either fades or becomes brassy within a few short weeks of getting colored, its pretty ridiculous. I have naturally blonde hair that I’ve been lightening for as long as I can remember. Because I had never heard of purple shampoo I found myself religiously going to the salon and spending tons of money. When I decided to color my hair the white/ grey that it is now is when I got introduced to purple shampoo.
WHY DID NO ONE TELL ME ABOUT THIS BEFORE??!!!!!
What Is It? Purple shampoos and conditioners are used to tone out unwanted yellow/ orange tones in blonde hair. AKA they remove brassiness.
How It Works: I was scared that a shampoo like this would cause tons of damage to my hair since I assumed it had some sort of bleach in it. However, since using these products I haven’t noticed any extra damage to my hair. Purple shampoo works because a small amount of purple color is absorbed into your hair, thus canceling out the red/yellow undertones. Anddd thats about all the hair science I know!
Why Shimmer Lights Is The Best: I had tried a few other brands, even more expensive ones and barely noticed a difference in the color of my hair. When I bought this shampoo I was just getting back from a trip to Italy, it had been about 3 weeks since getting my hair colored white/silver and I was already blonde again; seriously no grey or silver. I was almost deterred from continuing to spend my money on the silver color. I purchased shimmer lights after reading a review hoping it would save my hair. Oh my gosh, it did. The first time I used it I lathered my hair up with the shampoo and let it sit while I shaved my legs. When I came out of the shower, to my surprise, I was a silver goddess again.
In addition, this shampoo is amazing because it always leaves my hair feeling soft and clean. Other products I’ve used have left my hair gritty or looking like it needed a second wash.
The Routine: I use the shampoo on a daily basis the same way I would use any other shampoo, I leave it in for 2-3 minutes while I wash my face and such. When I feel that my hair needs an extra boost I’ll leave it in longer. My goal is to keep my hair as white and light as possible, if this isn’t your goal then just use the shampoo once a week and leave it in for 5-10 minutes.
Will It Turn My Hair Purple? It can. Especially if your hair is on the whiter side like mine. The shampoo itself is a super rich purple color that’s absorbed into your hair, if you leave it too long it could tint it. But don’t stress, it won’t last long and doesn’t happen easily! Personally, I love how strong the shampoo is, I purposefully leave it in longer for the added color.
What’s It Gunna Cost Me? Really you should be asking, what’s it going to save me? I go 3 months, yes THREE, in between hair appointments now. Literally, my secret weapon. The Clairol Shimmer Lights Shampoo and Conditioner run around $10 each and usually last me 2 months. Hint: you don’t need the conditioner. The shampoo is where you get all the color power and personally I like using my Tresemme conditioner way better!
Who Does Your Hair? I see Michelle at The Hot Seat Salon in El Cajon, San Diego. If you’re in the area I highly recommend her. Let her know I sent you!
Good luck ladies! I hope this shampoo helps save you some money!
