For me the hardest makeup product to shop for has always been foundation. My skin has not always been good to me, I’ve gone from severe acne, to extreme dryness, to redness all over. I’m now at a much happier place with my skin after completing treatment with Accutane but that definitely doesn’t mean a good foundation isn’t necessary. I have tried TONS of foundations, starting with drugstore brands and working my way up and I will confidently say that if you spend your money on any makeup product it better be your foundation.
Over the past year I have fallen in love Makeup Forever Ultra HD foundation and the Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation. Generally, I tend to gravitate more towards the Makeup Forever only because it’s a little less pricey. Then, when I feel like my skin is getting used to the Makeup Forever foundation I’ll switch to the Armani to keep my skin on its toes! Does anyone else get that, like after a few months of using something you skin gets used to it and suddenly the product doesn’t seem so amazing anymore? I also always keep a little of each foundation on hand so if my skin is in a particular mood one day I can pick the foundation I think will work best or combine them!
Both of these foundations were there with me before, during and after Accutane and thats what truly sold me on them. When I had acne neither made me break out (worse) and when I had dry skin they didn’t make me flakey.
Makeup Forever Ultra HD Invisible Coverage Foundation $43 (my shade: R230)
Why I Love it: This foundation goes on my skin smoothly, its rather liquidy so it blends out flawlessly and looks invisible on the skin (I use a beauty blender to apply!). I never need to use a lot of product, in fact less is more, and therefore, the bottle lasts me for many weeks. I love how natural it leaves my skin looking with a slightly dewy finish that combats my dry(ish) skin. This foundation is also super light weight so if you do have acne and need to add layers of concealer or powder this foundation keeps you from looking ‘cakey’. If you don’t have acne the lightweight formula helps smooth out your skin tone and blur fine lines without looking like makeup. I wouldn’t say this foundations biggest strength is being long lasting, although, it generally last me through a waitressing shift if I put some powder over it. This foundation, as promised by the company, lives up to its purpose- it looks great in my photos. I obviously take a lot of photos and this foundation keep my skin look flawless and captures the light perfectly to camouflage any imperfections.
Why I Don’t Love it: Since the coverage is only light to medium I would have to build it up on my skin when I had acne and if I built it to thick it would start creasing. I started just keeping the foundation light and using concealer and powder on top.
What else you need to know: Get a sample of this foundation before you commit. I read many reviews on this product and if I learned anything its that people either love or hate this foundation. In addition, this foundation come in a whopping 40 shades!!!! It also doesn’t oxidize so it’ll work great on fair skin.
Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation $64 (my shade: 4.75)
Why I Love it: Like really, really, really, love it. This foundation has a light and luminous appearance on the skin, with just enough matifying power to keep you from looking greasy. Again, this foundation is easily blendable and leaves your skin looking natural and truly feeling smooth like silk. When suffering from acne I found myself more willing to splurge on this foundation because it didn’t sit in my pores or break me out. The Luminous Silk foundation is also very long lasting and I never notice it breaking apart, even on my problem areas. This foundation is very thin and liquidy which makes it so you can build it up until you reach your desired coverage. You can build it up as much as you like because the formula absorbs nicely into skin, keeping you from looking cakey. You will often find beauty reviews calling this the ‘Holy Grail Foundation’ and I have to say, they aren’t wrong!
Why I Don’t Love it: I actually just learned this when I was doing some research about this products ingredients for this post, apparently this foundation contains very small amounts of alcohol and fragrance that could be irritating to the skin. Personally these ingredients have not had an effect on my skin, even when I was on Accutane. In addition, the price is a big downer for me, especially since its a lighter coverage and I have to use more product to build it up, I just can’t afford to go through it that fast.
Hard to tell in pictures but here’s a before and after for you guys!
